Install Linux Kernel 4.0 in DEB based systems

We’ll see how to install or upgrade Linux Kernel 4.0 in Debian based systems. For example, Here we’ll see how to install this latest Kernel in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

Run the following command to find the version of Linux kernel installed on your system:

uname -r

Output:

3.13.0-24-generic

As you see in the above output, the current Kernel version is 3.13.0-24.

Now, let us update the kernel to 4.0 version.

Download the Kernel 4.0 version using the ‘wget’ command:

On 64 bit systems:

wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-vivid/linux-headers-4.0.0-040000_4.0.0-040000.201504121935_all.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-vivid/linux-headers-4.0.0-040000-generic_4.0.0-040000.201504121935_amd64.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-vivid/linux-image-4.0.0-040000-generic_4.0.0-040000.201504121935_amd64.deb

On 32 bit systems:

wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-vivid/linux-headers-4.0.0-040000_4.0.0-040000.201504121935_all.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-vivid/linux-headers-4.0.0-040000-generic_4.0.0-040000.201504121935_i386.deb
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.0-vivid/linux-image-4.0.0-040000-generic_4.0.0-040000.201504121935_i386.deb

To install Kernel 4.0, run:

sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-4.0.0-*.deb linux-image-4.0.0-*.deb

Then, update grub using command:

sudo update-grub

Reboot your system.

Run the following command to see if the new Kernel has been updated.

uname -r

Output:

4.0.0-040000-generic

If you face any problem after updating Kernel, reboot your system and log in with previous Kernel.

To log in to the previous Kernel. go to ‘Advanced options for Ubuntu’ in the Boot menu.

After logging in to old kernel, run the following command to remove the Kernel 4.0 version.

sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-4.0.0-* linux-image-4.0.0-*

Reboot your system.
