Leaked images of Elephone P1000 – The OnePlus Killer loaded with CyanogenMod

By now we all know about OnePlus One the self-determined ‘Flagship Killer’ but did you know there are a number of companies competing to be the ‘OnePlus Killer’.

Besides the criticism for their notorious invite system and general fulfilment process the OnePlus One is generally receiving favorable reviews and especially when considering the cost of the device. After their recent (and fast) ‘success’ it seems other companies are looking to become the next OnePlus successor. Today we can bring you details of the first company looking to dethrone OnePlus.

Elephone is another Chinese smartphone manufacturer which is growing within the China domestic market. However leaked images today reveal their long-game is to try and hit the notes OnePlus have over the last year.

Gizchina yesterday received leaked images from what they call “a high level employee at Elephone”. The images are of Elephone’s newest device the P1000 which is remarkably similar to the OnePlus One. Now it is no secret that companies within China quickly copied and cloned the OnePlus one on other devices but (if the images and specs) are true than this will be the most all-round and highest-spec clone to become available.

The P1000 will come equipped with 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor (same as the One), Adreno 330 GPU (same as the One), 3 GB RAM (same as the One) and a 13 MP Sony rear camera (again same as the One). However there are some minor differences. The P1000 will contain a larger screen measuring 5.88” compared the One’s 5.5” which is already attracted criticism. The screen on the One is large and as such a larger screen is not likely to receive a warm reception. The resolution will also be greater than the One’s with a top resolution of 2560 x 1440 compared to 1920 x 1080 on the One. This again will be an issue for contention. The higher the resolution the quicker the battery drain and the more performance is likely to suffer.

It also worth noting that other comparisons are not so favorable. For instance we do not have any details on the battery capacity or life, the internal memory will only be 32 GB (compared to the One’s 64 GB) and there is no mention of an external memory or SD slot. There is also no mention of the front facing camera and its specs which again is rather good on the One with a 5 MP front shooter.

However the most interesting claim (and similarity between the two devices) is the P1000 will also come loaded with CyanogenMod (CM) out of the box. Generally speaking, CM pre-installed has become a staple of the One’s marketing ploy and it will be interesting to see if this is a real addition to the P1000. As of yet, CM have not confirmed the reports and this generally would be expected from CM who normally are proud to officially announce such coalitions which is leading to criticism that this may not be an official release of CM. Again, when OnePlus secured CyanogenMod they purpose built a version of their operating system (CM11S) just for the One. Instead P1000 simply claim their device will come loaded with a CM version based on Android 4.4 (KitKat).

Regardless of the spec similarities and differences the most important one will certainly be the price of the P1000. OnePlus made its name by offering high end at a mid-range price. If Elephone hope to achieve the same sort of status then they will need to also be able to compete on price as well as product. As yet we have no indication as to what the device will cost. In terms of release the source at Gizchina advises the device will be officially launched (and released) in October so we wont have to wait too long to find out the final details.

So what do you guys think? Is this a OnePlus Killer or simply another knock-off? Will you be staying tuned or thinking of buying? As always let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment.
